F+L Week 2017 | Arup Gangopadhyay | Engine Tribology Technology Trend and Engine Oil Challenges
Improving fuel economy of engines remains a high priority for engine manufacturers. Mechanical friction losses in an engine consume about 7-10% of the total energy input. Therefore, reducing mechanical friction can contribute directly to fuel economy improvement, often at a low cost. There have been incremental improvements in friction reduction in tribologically critical engine parts through improved finish, materials, engine oil, and design leading to substantial gain in fuel economy. New materials are being introduced with new engine technologies. This presentation will briefly review lubrication regimes in new engine designs in critical engine components and opportunities for friction reduction. This will be followed by industry trends in the application of these various attributes, for friction reduction and identification of challenges for engine oil formulations.
